Franz Kafka schrieb 1913 in sein Tagebuch: „Im Kino gewesen. Geweint“. Kino war zur Zeit des Tagebucheintrags als neues Massenmedium noch jung (stumm, meist Programm aus Kurzfilmen und Slapstick, Melodramen). Kinobesuche waren populär und konnten starke unmittelbare Gefühle wecken. Viele Leser und Forscher betonen die filmische Qualität von Kafkas Erzähltechnik (szenische Kürze, visuelle Metaphern, Montage-ähnliche Sequenzen). In 1913, Franz Kafka wrote in his diary: “Went to the cinema. Cried.” At the time of this diary entry , cinema was still in its infancy as a new mass medium (silent films, usually consisting of short films and slapstick, melodramas). Going to the cinema was popular and could evoke strong, immediate emotions. Many readers and researchers emphasise the cinematic quality of Kafka’s narrative technique (scenic brevity, visual metaphors, montage-like sequences). Several of his texts were later adapted for film and cinema. This is also the case with my ink drawings based on Kafka’s texts, created with the idea of painting film stills.
